This project was for the full refurbishment and reorganisation of a loft apartment near Waterloo station, on the 3rd floor of a converted Warehouse.

The existing flat was a large open space with a platform bedroom that was difficult to access and had a 1.2m ceiling height. The clients brief was to find a way to create a proper bedroom with full ceiling height, plus a place for guests to sleep, without reducing the open plan feel of the loft space.

Our concept was to extend the existing mezzanine to allow a bedroom to be inserted underneath. The platform above then become a guest sleeping space and generous storage cupboards. This allowed us to retain the open plan living space, though it was reconfigured to create more defined zones for the kitchen and dining areas.

The bathroom is both an en-suite and guest bathroom with ‘Jack and Jill’ doors, as this created the most efficient use of space.

Access to the mezzanine is via a yellow ladder that can be hung on the wall as a decorative object when not in use. The bedroom was given a large sliding pocket door to bring air and light into the space. The walls and ceiling are painted almost black to create a cave like feeling, and this also creates the sensation of a higher ceiling.

TESTIMONIAL

“My flat has been totally transformed! Simon was a master at guiding us through the design process, teasing out what we hoped to achieve; what was important to us and our friends who all had views. With some trepidation we turned some of his ideas down but he was not fussed and came up with new ideas. Making decisions on lights, fittings, kitchen equipment was all made easy which was fabulous -he sensed our style and gave us easy to pick from options.

The end result - nothing short on fantastic! Everyone who visits comments on it and we love living here. The layout is perfect, the colour scheme works really well (very dark ceiling - who would have thought?), and the seemingly small details like shelves inset in places are important touches.” Jeanette L
