COUNTRY HOUSE
New library room and refurbishment
EAST SUSSEX
Every country house should have a well-stocked library. Our project in East Sussex creates a quietly contemporary room which is snug and inviting, centred around a window seat overlooking the garden. We also opened up the kitchen and breakfast room, refurbished four bathrooms and the utility room. A limited palette of materials and colour were used across the design to highlight bespoke fittings such as the steel framed shower screen and contemporary lighting.
The new library is a contemporary space designed to feel like an intimate hideaway. The room is hidden behind a bookshelf door and an existing window becomes a reading nook.
The bookcases wrap around the room with curved corner sections to soften the joinery. A slatted base detail provides hidden storage cupboards.
The old country kitchen was difficult to use due to the number of door openings, meaning there was little space for kitchen units. The space was opened up to the breakfast room to create a more sociable space and the kitchen reconfigured to add more worktop space and an island unit for a more sociable feel.
All the bathrooms in the house were refurbished in a classic contemporary style, with wall panelling, Crittall shower doors combined with traditional sanitaryware.
TESTIMONIAL
“Yard Architects did such an amazing job the first time I used them I did it again! A friendly, vibrant practice who effortlessly adapted to two very different design projects - one a modern flat in London, the other a much older house in the country. In both cases they listened attentively to my thoughts and came up with a range of exciting options for me to choose from. An absolute joy to work with!” Steve W
